Honorary Secretary of the Tekeyan Trust London, Honorary Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Tekeyan Centre Fund in Yerevan, and a prominent representative of the Armenian community in Great Britain, Mr. Vartan Ouzounian has devoted more than six decades of dedicated service to the Armenian people both in the Diaspora (in Lebanon, Ethiopia, and Great Britain), and in his homeland, Armenia.
Born in Beirut into a family that had survived the Armenian Genocide, he attended the elementary school of The Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia, followed by the Hovakimian-Manoukian Secondary School of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU). He subsequently pursued his higher education in London. From an early age, he was raised in the Armenian spirit, with a deep sense of patriotism and love for national culture, and developed a profound awareness of the importance of preserving Armenian national identity. From his student years onward, dedicating himself to the service of his people, he was actively and fruitfully involved in the national and spiritual life of Armenian communities.
He is among the founders of the Tekeyan Trust London (TTL), the Tekeyan Centre Fund in Yerevan, and the Komitas Choir of London. With great dedication, he has served the Ararat Club of Ethiopia, the Armenian Home Youth Association in London, the AGBU, the Tekeyan Cultural Association, the Tekeyan Trust London, the Armenian Democratic Liberal Party, the Tekeyan Centre Fund, and numerous other national institutions, strengthening Armenia–Diaspora ties through culture.
Through his tireless efforts, numerous important initiatives were brought to life, including a student cultural festival in Lebanon; social, cultural, and sporting events in Ethiopia; exhibitions and lectures; the publication of the Erebuni newspaper; the Araks Dance Ensemble and the Komitas Choir in Great Britain; performances in the United Kingdom by cultural figures, dance and musical ensembles, and theatrical groups invited from Armenia; and, ultimately, the charitable activities of the Tekeyan Centre Fund.
In 2011, the Order of Saint Nerses the Graceful was granted to Vartan Ouzounian by His Holiness KareKin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians.
In 2017, he was awarded the Komitas Medal by the Ministry of Diaspora of the Republic of Armenia in recognition of his many years of dedicated service to the Armenian people and his contribution to the representation and preservation of Armenian culture and values in various Diaspora communities.
